Ka'
Grinding stones, known in K'iche' as ka' and in Spanish as metate, are crucial to preparing maize as food. The importance of maize cultivation, foodways, and women's knowledge are clearly documented in the Popol Wuj, from the destruction of the first humans by ka' and xot (comales/griddles), to Ixmukane's nine grindings of yellow and white corn to create the first true human race -- the ancestors of we who now inhabit the earth.
