Popol Winaq pa Jom Tzalatz'

Según apunta el lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 195n333), el nombre del octavo título del linaje Kaweq, Popol Winaq pa Jom Tzalatz', "de nuevo hace referencia al consejo [popol] y jom hace referencia al campo de juego de pelota y tzalatz' a su construcción lateral inclinada; es decir, a lo que ahora sería un 'ministro de deportes.'"

Whereas Colop (2008), quoted in Spanish above, translates the name of the official most closely associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame as akin to today's "minister of sports," anthropologist Allen J. Christenson (2007: 270n746) identifies a more negative or diabolic connotation. He explains his translation, "Councilor in the Ballcourt of Punishment," as derived from definitions in Coto's colonial-era dictionary, namely jom (“ballcourt"), tzal (“war, battle, conflict") and tzalatz (“punishment, or penalty”).
