Ch'ab'i Tukur

This character, whose K'iche' name, Ch'ab'i Tukur is translated by scholar Alan J. Christenson (2007: 107) as "Arrow Owl," is one of the four messengers of Xib'alb'a. Each messenger takes the form of a different kind of owl: Ch'ab'i Tukur (Arrow Owl), Juraqan Tukur (One Leg Owl), Kaqix Tukur (Macaw Owl), and Jolom Tukur (Skull Owl). As Christenson (2007:107fn249) notes, "Owls continue to be regarded as heralds of sickness and death by the Quichés, and they are extremel unwelcome anywhere near homes (Oakes 1951, 46; Bunzel 1952, 272, 343; Schultze-Jena 1954, 84; Watanabe 1992, 68).

Por su parte el destacado lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 66fn90) observa que "Estos cuatro mensajeros de Jun Kame' y Wuqub' Kame' '1 muerte' y '7 muerte' llegan a llamar a Jun Junajpu y a Wuqub Junajpu para ir a Xibalba, lugar donde mueren. De aquí podría derivar la creencia de que cuando canta un tecolote, es porque está anunciando la muerte." En la edición poética escrita en el k'iche' contemporáneo, Colop (1999: 115fn265), citando a Ximénez y a Brasseur, añade que el tecolote tiene una conotación de traición en la cultura k'iche'.
