Wuqub' Junajpu

Wuqub' Junajpu, brother of Jun Junajpu, forms part of the complex family tree at the heart of the Popol Wuj. Wuqub' Junajpu, whose name translates into "Seven" (wuqub) and Junajpu (day on the traditional Maya calendar), is one of the sons of Ixmukane and Xpiyakok, the ancestors who hold the traditional knowledge of the K'iche' people. Whereas Jun Junajpu and his wife, Ixb'aqiyalo, bore sons Jun B'atz' and Jun Chowen, Wuqub' Junajpu did not marry. Mayanist scholar Allen J. Christenson (2007: 113n223) notes that Junajpu "is a day on the traditional highland Maya calendar, dedicated to the memory of ancestors."

Wuqub' Junajpu es el hermano soltero de Jun Junajpu, el esposo de Ixb'aqiyalo y el padre de Jun B'atz' y Jun Chowen. Los dos hermanos, Wuqub' Junajpu y Jun Junajpu, son hijos de los abuelos sabios-creadores del mundo Ixmukane y Xpiyakok. El lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2011: 209n51) señala que el nombre Junajpu literalmente quiere decir "Un Cerbatanero", pues jun es "uno," -aj "es el agentivo y pu es apócope de pub, 'cerbatana'". Wuqub' Junajpu es una de las varias figuras del texto que llevan el número siete en su nombre, incluyendo Wuqub' Kaqix y Wuqub' Kame'.
