Christenson (2007: note 170, page 83) disagrees with Colop. He suggests that the name Chimalmat "is almost certainly derived from the Nahuatl chimalmatl, meaning 'shield bearer,' a fairly common name for female deities. In Aztec legend, she was the mother of the Toltec priest-ruler Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl. Chimalmat is also one of the names for the mother of the Aztecs’ patron god, Huitzilopochtli, as well as the female bearer of cult objects in Aztec migration accounts. Alternatively, the name may be Quiché in origin, consisting of chi (preposition “at, in, to, on, from, etc.) and malmat (Basseta: to walk with haste) or malmot (Coto: “to appear unexpectedly,” particularly with regard to a phantasm)."
