K'ool

En una manera semejante al uso del término ab'ix (milpa), k'ool se refiere al sitio en el que se cultiva el maíz, muchas veces junto con el frijol y el chile. Los autores k'iche' del Popol Wuj dicen "ꜩucul cool" (2r) la cual expresión el equipo Ajtz'ib'ab' interpreta en el k'iche' contemporáneo como "tzuqul k'ool." Si bien el lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (1999: 25) escribe la frase en la misma manera en su edición poética en k'iche', cabe señalar que su traducción al español es "la siembra" (2008: 27). Cabe señalar que en maya yukateko se dice "k'ool," la cual palabra indica una larga e importante historia de contacto lingüístico y cultural en el mundo maya. Aquí pues observamos cómo diferentes autores interpretan los espacios sagrados de la vida agrícola, y cómo los autores k'iche' del texto original preservan un vocabulario rico y diverso sobre el cultivo del maíz.

Like ab'ix (milpa), k'ool refers to the four-cornered Mesoamerican maizefield. In addition to growing maize, farmers often plant beans and chile in their plots. Whereas the K'iche' authors of the Popol Wuj explicitly name the space as "ꜩucul cool" (2r) in the opening passages of the story, Ximénez translates it as "se sembrara" (it was planted) (2r). K'iche' linguist Sam Colop (2008: 27) similarly translates the expression as "la siembra" (the sowing) in his Spanish-edition work, although he preserves "k'ool" (milpa) in his poetic K'iche' edition (1999: 25). The highlands Maya scholars on the Multepal Project, who publish collectively as Ajtz'ib'ab', agree that the correct expression is k'ool, the term that is also used in Yukatek Maya. Here we see how the K'iche' authors of the Popol Wuj preserved a rich and diverse vocabulary for the spaces of maize cultivation, k'ool, ab'ix, and how translators have interpreted them over time.
