K'oy

According to anthropologist Allen J. Christenson (2007: 90n145), the general K'iche' term for "monkey" that is used throughout the Popol Wuj, k'oy, "refers to the spider monkey (Ateles vellerosus or Ateles geoffroyi). Central Mexican traditions are remarkably similar. The Anales de Cuauhtitlan relate the tradition that in the fourth age of the earth 'people were turned into monkeys. They were scattered over the mountains, and the monkey-men lived there' (León-Portilla 1980, 138)."

Según apunta el antropólogo Allen J. Christenson (2007: 90n145), la voz k'iche' k'oy se refiere al mono o mico conocido por su nombre científico Ateles vellerosus o Ateles geoffroyi. Cita al investigador Miguel León Portilla (1980) sobre las semejanzas entre las narrativas mayas y nahuas con respecto a la figura y el simbolismo del mono en las tradiciones de los pueblos indígenas de la región mesoamericana antes de 1492.
