Kik' Ya'

Kik' ya' (río de sangre) es, junto con puj ya' (río de agua podrida), uno de los dos ríos principales de Xib'alb'a. Su nombre deriva de kik' (sangre) y ya' (agua), pero por el contexto se entiene que el agua es un río. Al entrar a Xib'alb'a, Jun Junajpu y Wuqub' Junajpu encuentran varios obstáculos. Uno de ellos es un rio de sangre. La manera en la cual los hermanos pasan este obstáculo es simplemente la falta de beber del río. Ximénez traduce esta parte del texto como, "no bebíeron en el río, ní pudíeron ser venzídos síno q’que pasaron" (14v), con los padres, y "y estos ríos eran paraque fuesen ven /çídos, como pensaban los de el ínfíerno /y no los písaron," con los hijos (23v). Aquí cabe señalar que, aunque no han entrado a Xib'alb'a en este punto, el ambiente parece manifestar características del inframundo. 

Kik' ya (river of blood) is, alongside puj ya' (river of rotten water), one of the two main rivers of Xib'alb'a. Its name is derived from the terms kik' (blood) and ya' (water). From the descriptions in the text, it is clear that kik' ya' is a river rather than an ocean or lake. Two of the obstacles traversed by travellers into Xib'alb'a were rivers of blood and pus, both of which, the narrative suggests, are deadly to drink. Neither Jun Junajpu, Wuqub' Junahpu nor their children are stopped by them. Christenson (2007: 122, 160) translates the scenes as such, first with the parents: "Then they arrived at Blood River. They were able to pass through, because they did not drink from it" and then with the children, enacting important scenes of intergenerational memory and survival strategies: "And again they passed over Pus River and Blood River. In their hearts, the Xib'alba'ns had intended these as traps. But they were not troubled. They just passed over them, floating on their blowguns."
