K'el

K'el (la cotorra) es el tercer animal que lleva comida a los recién formados hombres de maíz. Su par es el joj (el cuervo), así formando una especie de complementariedad con los primeros animales de la tierra, yak (la zorra) y utiw (el coyote). El erudito maya Allen J. Christenson (2007: 181n459) ve un simbolismo adicional en las combinaciones de los colores de las aves. Él escribe, “La cotorra azul/verde brillante puede estar conectada con el cielo azul del día al igual que el verde vivo del cultivo de maíz. El cuervo negro, en contraste, representa la oscuridad de la noche y el interior de la tierra donde se planta la semilla de maíz, germina y comienza a crecer.”

K'el (parakeet) is the third animal in the series of four who bring food to the newly-formed men of corn. Parakeet is paired with joj (raven), such that the two birds form a complimentary pair with the first animals in the sequence, land-based yak (fox) and utiw (coyote). Mayanist scholar Allen J. Christenson (2007: 181n459) sees additional symbolism in the color pairings of the birds. He writes, " The bright blue/green parakeet may be connected with the blue sky of day as well as the living green of growing maize. The black raven, in contrast, represents the darkness of night and the interior of the earth where the maize seed is planted, germinates, and first begins to grow."
