Uk'u'x Ulew

Señala el destacado lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop que el nombre de la deidad Uk'u'x Ulew (2008: 26n21) significa, literalmente "Corazón de la Tierra". En el texto k'iche', añade el investigador (2008: 24n15) cuando se dice kaj ulew, cho palo, esto sería "literalmente: 'cielo tierra' y 'lago mar', metonimias para refirse al cosmos y a todas las aguas de la tierra, respectivamente."

Según el erudito maya Allen J. Christenson (2007: 53n21), las deidades creadoras Uk’u’x Kaj (Corazón del Cielo) y Uk’u’x Ulew (Corazón de la Tierra), están vinculadas a Uk’u’x Cho y Uk’u’x Palo, y entre sí.  Christenson (2007: 53n21) sugiere que K’ux pudiera referirse a “corazón” o a “espíritu.” Este par de deidades por lo tanto encarnan los poderes internos de grandes masas de agua estancadas. El Popol Vuh dice que antes de la creación, el mundo consistía de una extensión vasta de aguas placidas de donde emergieron todas las cosas (p. 67; líneas 129-136).”

The distinguished K’iche’ linguist Sam Colop (2008: 26n21) points out that the name of the deity Uk’u’x Ulew means, literally, “Heart of the Earth.” In the K’iche’ text, adds Colop (2008: 24n15) when it says kaj ulew, cho palo, this would be “literally: ‘earth sky’ and ‘long ocean,’ metonymies that refer to the cosmos and all the waters of the earth, respectively.

According to Mayanist scholar Allen J. Christenson (2007: 53n21), the creator deities Uk'u'x Kaj (Heart of Sky) and Uk'u'x Ulew (Heart of Earth) are linked to Uk'u'x Cho and Uk'u'x Palo, and to each other. Christenson (2007: 53n21) suggests that K'ux may refer to either “heart” or “spirit.” This pair of deities thus embodies the inward powers of large, standing bodies of water. The Popol Vuh states that prior to the creation the world consisted of a vast expanse of placid waters from which all things emerged (p. 67; lines 129-136)."
