Several scholars have commented on the overt intervention of Ximénez into the story of the Popol Wuj, wherein a person (jun winaq) begins to speak with the four founders, B'alam K'itze', B'alam Aq'ab', Majuk'utaj, and Iqi' B'alam, and the colonial friar indicates in parenthesis, "(Demonium loquens cis) / (Demonío q’les hablaba)" (Ximénez 1701: 36v), what Mayanist expert Allen J. Christenson (2007: 202) translates into Engish as "Demon speaking from here on." Christenson argues that this moment represents Ximénez's only explicit commentary in the text.

In his Literal Poetic Translation (2004), Christenson (2003: 192) adds, "This is a singular instance in which Ximénez glosses the text with a brief comment in Latin, referring to the messenger from Xib'alb'a as a demon, or devil. That Ximénez chose to do this only once and in Latin argues for the overall accuracy of the Maya text as he transcribed it."

This is supported by Ximénez's own account in his Historia de la provincia, where he claims (emphasis ours):

determiné el trasuntar de verbo adverbum todas sus historias como las traduje en nuestra lengua Castellana de la lengua Quiche en que las halle escritas desde el tiempo de la conquista, que entonces (como allí dicen) las redujeron de su modo de escribir al nuestro

Como así apunta Sam Colop (2008: 235n232), "Aquí y entre paréntesis, aparece una inserción latina que dice: 'Demonium loquens eis", lo cual es un agregado de Ximénez dentro del texto k'iche' y que en la columna en español traduce como "demonio que les hablaba". Esta asociación demoníaca por parte de Ximénez debe derivarse de que el Popol Wuj se habla de un personaje alado, como un murciélago venido de Xib'alb'a, lugar que Ximénez traduce como 'infierno.'" Colop, por su parte, le llama a esta persona, sencillamente, jun winaq ("una persona"), mientras Adrián Recinos (1949: 113) elige traducir el personaje como "el mensajero de Xibalbá."
