U nool u ajawil le Kíirolilo’ob

The K’iche’ authors of the Popol Wuj explain the origin of the three principal lineages of the K’iche’ people — that is, Kaweq, Nija’ib, and Ajaw K’iche’ — as a shared heritage coming from the east. They add that these first grandparents are “are pocol quirol” (or “They multipliers, Increasers,” in the literal translation of Allen J. Christenson (2003: 5205-6) whose names will never be forgotten. In contrast, a team of contemporary Yukatek scholars (Briceño Chel et al. 2012: 154-155) writes the actual name of that grandfather, “u nool u ajawil le Kíirolilo’ob” (the name of the grandfather of the lord/father of the Kírol). This small difference indicates once more how various Maya authors have interpreted the history of the ancient migration of the K’iche’ people.
